Course Outline:

Day 1:Really understanding your Analytics Implementation

When: July 21st 9am - 5pm
 

This course gives attendees the knowledge and ability to create, configure, and troubleshoot their Google Analytics accounts. Through this course you will gain an understanding of the technology behind the interface, gaining insight into the strengths and weaknesses of javascript tracking and what this means for your data.

In this course you will learn to:

  • Create & configure Google Analytics Accounts appropriate for the Web Sites they will track
  • Add tracking code to a website and troubleshoot basic problems
  • Create the basic profiles, goals and filters your Web Site requires
  • Determine what constitutes a GA visit or ‘session’ and how it impacts your reports
  • Add eCommerce tracking code to a site
  • Add Sub- and Cross-domain tracking (or both)
  • Link AdWords and GA accounts
  • Configure and troubleshoot Campaign Tracking
  • Configure Site Search
  • Describe the connection between tracking and the reports populated
  • Approach and Structure
  • Technical aspects of Google Analytics and concepts

Approach and Structure

Technical aspects of Google Analytics and concepts of the underlying technology are the main focus of this course.

Lessons will consist of:

  • Slides to convey concepts, context and structure
  • Live demonstrations so as to explain convey process
  • Labs to provide attendees the opportunity to perform tasks and get feedback
  • All content, references and additional relevant resources available online
  • Questions encouraged and answers will be generous (answers to highly specific questions may follow by email)

Taking copious notes will be unnecessary.

Requirements and Prerequisites

  • Attendees are requested to bring their own wifi enabled laptops (although some spares may be available)
  • Administrative access to a live Google Analytics Profile is a great advantage
  • Some familiarity with the use of Windows or Mac and a browser is essential
  • HTML and basic Javascript knowledge will be helpful

Day 2: Making the Most of your Metrics

When: July 23rd 9am to 5pm
 

Each student will use their own site (or our sample site) and its analytics as the raw material for the course. We will be taking a top-down look at your website, tracing its objectives and targets through its tracking. Between instruction and hands-on application, we will learn what questions to ask to figure our what reports, metrics and Key Performance Indicators are relevant to your site.

Where the preceding GA Implementation Course is mostly technical, using the reports only to show what is being tracked, this reporting course focuses on extracting insights from one's data so that action may be taken to improve our sites' performance.

In this course you will learn to:

  • identify sites' direct and indirect objectives
  • measure and track sites' performance with GA reports
  • identify the KPIs relevant to different sites
  • derive insight from GA's reports
  • determine the types of action to take or recommend to improve your sites' performance

Outline of overall course structure (i.e., lessons/topics)

The course will be divided into 5 sessions, as follows:

  • Session 1: GA Reports flyover covering dimension, metrics, funnels and other reports
  • Session 2: Identifying your sites objectives and how those relate to the reports
  • Session 3: What are the KPI's relevant to your site and where are those KPI's in the reports
  • Session 4: Identifying what requires action and how the results can be measured
  • Session 5: (Optional) Networking session after we're done.
